Roses are fantastic flowers in various shapes, sizes, and hues. They are a favorite in gardens across the globe, with over 150 types growing as shrubby plants, climbers, and groundcovers. However, preserving the freshness of roses can be tricky, but it is possible with proper care and maintenance of roses. With our tips, you can extend the lifespan of your bouquet of flowers by hours or even days. When you receive your stunning bouquet, take immediate action to ensure that the roses maintain their vibrancy. Here’s what you need to do:

1. Unpack your roses ASAP

unwrap your rose bouquet right away and let them breathe! The Plastic traps moisture, which can wilt the petals. But make sure you leave the cardboard sleeves (if there are any ) around the stems for protection. The cardboard keeps the stems safe until it’s time to plop them in a vase.

2. Pinch and Release

To keep your flowers fresh for a longer time, you can simply pinch the gap between the petals and the stem and release it, as it allows oxygen to flow freely and prevents the flowers from wilting too quickly.

3. Trim the Stems

To ensure that your roses maintain hydration properly, trim the stem at least 3-5cm and cut the ends at an angle to increase the surface area for water absorption.

4. Remove (Prune) some of the leaves & Guard petals

removing petals

When you find brownish petals on the outside of your rose, don’t worry. These are the old guard petals that sometimes look worn out. Florists leave them on for protection during transit like bubble wrap. Remember to remove any leaves falling below your vase’s waterline. Dirty water makes your stems drink faster and will make them fade quicker.

5. Keep the roses in the right clean Vase.

To keep your roses looking fresh and fabulous, it’s essential to get them into a vase filled with extraordinary, clean water as soon as possible. This will prevent dehydration and ensure they start their journey in your home on the right foot (or stem!). Always use a clean vase and thoroughly wash vases between uses to provide fresh flowers with clean water to prolong their life. Avoid overcrowding the vase, as this can restrict airflow and water access.

6. Place them in plenty of clean, lukewarm water

Roses need a lot of water. To keep your roses healthy, it’s essential to put them in water within 1-3 hours after leaving the Floral Department, depending on the temperature outside. To fill the vase, add water until it’s half or two-thirds full. Make sure the water is clean to prevent bacteria from reaching your roses.

7. Re-trim & Change water every few days

Using clean and fresh water for your vase is often recommended, just like you would prefer for your consumption. This could help ensure the longevity and beauty of your flowers. To keep your flowers fresh, trim their stems by 1cm daily and add flower food when the water changes.

8. Keep them Safe from Sunlight

Preventing flowers being exposed to direct sunlight will keep your roses fresher. This is because direct sunlight can cause them to wither and lose color quickly. Instead, we suggest placing your bouquet on a kitchen, dining, or entry table, away from south-facing windows and heat sources like radiators and fires. Cooler temperatures can also help prolong the life of your roses.

9. Keep an Eye on your Roses

If you put roses in a vase, they usually last 5-7 days. But some roses can last up to 2 weeks if you care for them properly. Keep an eye on your roses, and if the water turns yellowish or cloudy before the third day, replace it to prevent bacterial growth. After that, cut the stems again, and the roses should start looking better within 2-3 hours.

10. Mist the petals
